Remembering the Victims of the September 11th Attacks
Honoring the Lost and Recognizing the Resilience of Fort Pierce's Community
On the morning of September 11, 2001, the world was forever changed by the tragic events that unfolded. One of the four hijacked planes that day, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back against the terrorists.
Among those on board Flight 93 were 10 passengers and crew members with connections to Fort Pierce, Florida. In the aftermath of the attacks, the community came together to mourn the loss of their loved ones and to honor their memory.
A City United in Remembrance
In the days and weeks following the attacks, Fort Pierce held several memorial services and vigils to honor the victims of Flight 93. The community also established a scholarship fund to support the education of the children of the victims.
In 2006, the city dedicated a permanent memorial to the victims of Flight 93 at the Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. The memorial features a granite wall inscribed with the names of the victims, as well as a bronze sculpture of a bald eagle in flight.
The Legacy of Flight 93
The events of September 11th had a profound impact on the community of Fort Pierce. The loss of so many lives left a lasting scar, but it also brought the community closer together.
The legacy of Flight 93 is one of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. The passengers and crew of Flight 93 faced unimaginable terror, but they fought back against the terrorists and helped to prevent even greater loss of life.
Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their memory will continue to inspire the people of Fort Pierce and the nation as a whole.
