Mississippi State is the 2021 College World Series champion after defeating Vanderbilt 9-0 in Game 3 of the championship series on Monday night. The Bulldogs won the first national championship in program history and became the first team from the state of Mississippi to win the College World Series.
Mississippi State's Road to the Championship
Mississippi State entered the College World Series as the No. 4 national seed after winning the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 9-0 win over Arizona and then defeated Virginia 6-2 in the second round. In the semifinals, Mississippi State rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Texas A&M 5-4 in 10 innings.
In the championship series, Mississippi State won the first two games against Vanderbilt by scores of 9-7 and 4-3. Vanderbilt won Game 3 by a score of 3-2 to force a winner-take-all Game 4. In Game 4, Mississippi State jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, winning 9-0 to claim the national championship.
Mississippi State's victory was the culmination of a remarkable season for the Bulldogs. The team finished the year with a 50-17 record and won its first SEC Tournament championship since 2019. Head coach Chris Lemonis was named the National Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
